Individual Psychology

Adler was one of Freud’s contemporaries, like Jung. They shared in common a departure from Freud’s theories, for example, that everything is driven by the sexual desire. Adler founded Individual Psychology. Jung, Analytical Psychology. They had different theories of dreams and Jung thought Adler’s ideas could explain some dream content. Adler did not hold that dreams came from the unconcious or numinous or that they were compensatory, but instead that they were imagingations for how someone wanted to feel just like the imagination in the waking state. Adler thought most neurosis were caused by the drive for superiority. Superiority of children over simblings, over their parents, over others. I have seen this phenomenon before and find it explains well an awful lot. This is the school of teleology where the effect can simply be expalined by what the person wanted, their motivations, whereas Freud taught etiology, that whatever the effect it is from a prior cause, perhaps a trauma, in time. Adler thought that people remember things differently based upon their goal.
